Resumo: The International Panel for Climate Change recommends reaching carbon neutrality in the next 20 years. The challenge seems gigantic, and to be honest, out of reach.
But what should we do? Stopping all of our activities cannot be a desirable future. The current pandemic hardly reduced global CO2 emissions by 5% in 2020 at a hard social and economic cost. It is therefore fundamental to invent other trajectories, that can propose a desirable climate neutral and circular built environment.

What is possible, right here, right now, with the technologies we know and the materials we have? CO2 emissions from concrete could be reduced by more than 50% when everyone is doing well what they know how to do. It engages the cement producers, but also and most importantly all the other actors from concrete manufacturers, structural engineers, architects, demolition companies and waste managers… Rather than oppose mineral and biobased (massive vs lightweight) construction we could find synergies where a biobased façade made out of timber framed strawbale is directly compensating the CO2 emissions from the optimised low carbon concrete structure. Therefore, the building is climate neutral on the year of the construction with the materials used on site. Right here, right now!

It is the appropriate combination of materials and technologies and the synergies between actors that can achieve climate neutral and circular buildings within such a short period of time. To do so, no material war but rather the promotion of a good material diet. No time to wait for the silver bullet that will save us all. It doesn’t exists… or if it does, it will arrive too late.
